Richardson's Beach. Hilo Beaches

Aloha! One of our favorite swimming beaches is at the end of Kalanianaole Avenue and it's called Richardson's Beach.

We have been going there for more than 25 years. It's about a 15 minute leisurely drive from Koili Point.

When our boys were younger, we would kit them out with a net on a stick and little buckets and they would net the minnow type fish that swim in the little ponds. Catch and release of course.

And for me, as well as with the kids, we would swim in the semi-protected beach. Not only is it a decently long stretch to swim for a workout, it's also fun as you are guaranteed to see a variety of fish including the Hawaii State Fish — the humuhumunukunukuapua`a — as well as many other species of reef fish. On occasion, we have also seen the large Hawaiian Green Turtle just a few yards away from the beach. (It's illegal to touch them by the way.)

With that, let me leave you with a Hawaiian word of the day: ' kahakai ' which means 'beach' in English.
