Stay Active: Outdoor Activities on the Big Island

BIG ISLAND
Our Favorite Hiking Trails
The Big Island is a hiker’s paradise, offering everything from breezy coastal walks to rugged volcano adventures. Whether you want to wander through lush rainforest, stroll past waterfalls, or trek across black lava fields, you’ll find something unforgettable just a short drive from Koili Point.
Most visitors start their journey at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, home to more than 150 miles of trails that reveal the island’s ever-changing landscape. Walk through Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), follow the Chain of Craters Trail, or explore otherworldly terrain shaped by lava flows and native forest. The park offers easy walks, moderate day hikes, and backcountry routes for experienced adventurers.
If you’re looking for something closer to home, the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail—also known as the King’s Trail—winds for 175 miles along the Kona coast, connecting sacred sites, ancient fishponds, and petroglyph fields. It’s an incredible way to combine light activity with a sense of place.
BIG ISLAND
Ocean Swimming & Water Activities
The Big Island’s warm waters invite you to move, float, and explore. Whether you’re after a quiet swim, a full workout, or time in the waves, there’s no shortage of options nearby. The Pāhoa Pool is a local favorite — newer, well-kept, and free to use, with plenty of lanes for a solid swim session. Just check the schedule before heading out. In Hilo, the “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium offers even more space for lap swimmers, and though the water runs a few degrees cooler, it’s refreshing once you dive in.
For a more adventurous day, try freediving with local guides through Deep Freediving. They offer intro classes and family-friendly sessions that let you experience Hawaii's underwater world in a calm, safe, and memorable way. Whether you’re gliding beneath the surface or swimming laps under the sun, the island’s waters have a way of leaving you refreshed and recharged.
