Our Guide to the Best Local Grinds
Food and Drink We Like
Hilo Burger Joint
One of the best burgers in Hilo by far and for a great price. Former Peace Corps Volunteer owner who is also very cool!
Ola Brew Company
Great locally brewed beers and staff is very cool. Burgers are also delicious here!
Kaleo's
This is one of our favorite lunch/dinner spots. They have a great menu and you can sit at the tables or at the bar.
Cafe Pesto
Nice lunch and/or dinner menus. It's in our top 5. My boys like their pizza. I usually get fresh catch salads with wine. When guests come into town and we want to take them to dinner, it's our go-to spot in downtown Hilo.
Suisan Fish Market
Suisan has arguably the best poke on the island. Fisherman bring their fresh catch daily to Suisan. It is definitely our family's favorite place for poke. They open at 9am and you can buy poke or plate lunch or just filets of fresh catches.
Island Naturals Market
Great place if you want/need organic natural food. Our family shops there quite a bit. They also have smoothies, morning coffee, sushi to go, sandwiches to go. It's a bit more epicurean than the other supermarkets around
Hilo KTA Superstore
KTA opens at 530am and is a supermarket where you can get all your food and drink needs.
Located at 50 East Puainako St in Hilo although there are a few around town. Their poke is slightly less costly than Suisan and very good. Good selection of wines and beers too.
Pineapples
The only open air restaurant in downtown Hilo that serves island inspired dishes including locally caught fish and a bunch of other tasty dishes.
They also have a 3-5 Happy Hour and oftentimes, you can order drinks served out of a pineapple.
Seaside Restaurant
Reservations recommended
Dinner Only from 4-8. We loved everything we had there. Too long to list and the quantities are abundant. Love it!
