Going Bananas
Aloha! We cut down a bunch of bananas a few weeks ago and hung them up in the tiki hut area to ripen and so that they are easily accessible to guests.
When you see one banana starting to turn yellow on the banana plant, it's time to cut them down. Then, each day, a couple of them will ripen.
Within about 5 days they will all be ripe.
Their taste is spectacular and if you are used to buying the big bananas from supermarkets on the mainland, you will definitely notice the difference — and the incredible flavor of these bananas.
Quick recipe: Take 3 bananas, puree them, add a bit of cocoa powder and put it all in the freezer. Next day, you will think you are eating cocoa and banana ice cream.
With that, let me leave you with a Hawaiian word of the day: 'Maiʻa' -- which translates to 'banana' in English.
