Naha Stone. Best places to visit Big Island
Aloha! What has always amazed me is that one of the most legendary pieces of history in Hawaii sits in the open for everyone to see. If this were France, a museum would surely have been built around it.
I'm talking about the Naha Stone which sits in front of the Hilo Public Library.
As you can see from the plaque that stands beside the stone, it came from the island of Kaua'i and babies were placed upon the stone to see if they were worthy of chiefly status.
The stone weighs about 7,000 pounds, or about 3.5 tons. I did some quick research and don't think the strongest people in the world today can lift such weights. Certainly King Kamehameha was incredibly strong to turn this stone over.
If you want to check it out in person, it's about a 10 minute drive from Koili Point. Just turn right up Waianuenue Avenue and it will be on your right in a few blocks.
Finally, let me leave you with a Hawaiian word of the day: ' naha ' -- which translates to, well, many different meanings. 'Bent' or 'curved' or "Broken" or a "Chief marrying his half-sister" are some of the translations.
