10 Years Ago at Koili Point
Prior to our buying the land in 2014, the property had been owned by: two private individuals, the Onomea Sugar Company, a member of the Hawaiian Royalty, and before that, King Kamehameha.
For the most part, since sugar production stopped in about 1990, the land had lain fallow with the exception of some sweet potato farming for a few seasons.
Prior to that, for the 125 years leading up to 1990, it was all sugar production.
There are vestiges of that era still found on the property including the way the land slopes into the middle as you look at the ocean.
A water fed system was developed that floated the cut cane to the bottom of the property. There, the sugar cane was separated from its leaves and sent via a gulley to Papa'ikou Beach Mill for processing.
The other parts of the cane were discarded over the cliff and you can still see the remnants of a small cement pipe down by the middle of the property near the cliff where that occurred.
Lots of fun stuff!
Finally, let me leave you with a Hawaiian word of the day: kōpaʻa -- which translates to "sugar" in English.
