Cacao on the Big Island
Aloha! This summer we have had an abundance of cacao at Koili Point. Two trees are really fruiting a lot and there are two more that will next year. Hawaii is the only U.S. State in which cacao can grow due to the climate and we are really fortunate to have this chocolate source right here at our fingertips!
If you want to learn more about cacao in general for a unique vacation experience on the Big Island, there are farms and tours not far from us and they make a great day trip for the family.
At the farms, you can learn about the history of cacao in Hawaii, how to turn that fruit into actual chocolate and, of course, taste test the various homemade products from locally grown trees.
A good resource for more info on all things cacao is Hawaiian Chocolate: Big Island Cacao Farm Tours & Shops (damecacao.com)
Finally, let me leave you with a Hawaiian word of the day: Kokoleka -- which translates to "chocolate."
