'Ahi Sashimi at Koili Point
One of the best things I like about living on the Hamakua Coast is that you get the freshest of fish all the time and there's always enough to share with friends which we did with some guests who recently stayed with us.
Fishermen go out at night and a day or two later, they return to Hilo Bay. They sell some of their fish to restaurants and grocery stores. But when the bounty is good, they filet the 'ahi tuna and sell it in packages direct from their coolers -- just north of Hilo as you head up to Koili Point.
For roughly $20, you get 3 to 5 pounds of sashimi grade tuna which, as you see in the photo, we cut up before adding some wasabi and soy sauce for a great local dinner.
For folks who like it cooked, cut the chunks into about 1 1/2 inch thick slices. Sear it for about 60 to 90 seconds on each side and it's ready to go! Squeeze a freshly picked lemon or lime from the yard for flavor. Hawaiian peppers also can add a kick.
With that, I want to leave you with a Hawaiian Word and its translation. Today's word is 'ahi. It means tuna, as in yellowfin tuna. Not to be confused with aku which is a bonito or skipjack variety.
