Lyman
E Komo Mai! Welcome!
Many of you who have stayed at Koili Point have met Lyman or at least have seen him taking care of many the outdoor aspects of the property. From planting trees to carrying out one of his landscape designs or perhaps to organically taking care of the plants and weeds, Lyman is one of the main reasons the property looks as tropical and nice as it does. We are very fortunate indeed to have Lyman on our team!
I can't think of a job that I have asked Lyman to perform that he couldn't already do or wanted to learn.
"Hey Lyman, have you ever built a tiki hut before?" He told me no but then he built one.
"Lyman, what do you think about taking down this invasive tree that looks like it's going to fall on the highway?" He came up with a plan, took down the tree, and thankfully we didn't hit any cars!
One day he said to me, "Len, what do you think about going to source some local 20-foot bamboo for a trellis project from this really intrepid area?" And we would go and come back with 15 bamboo poles...
We were looking to upgrade our wifi and I said, "Lyman, have you ever set up a wifi relay from one side of the highway to the other?" He hadn't but figured it out.
The list goes on and on. I just laugh as I'm writing because he always answers 'yes'!
Not only does Lyman possess such a wide range of talents in that respect, he is also incredibly personable and highly knowledgeable about the island and its offerings.
If you ever want to know about some hikes that are not well-publicized or you want to get some recommendations for activities or some really neat places to go, or if you just want to meet a really great guy, see if you can't catch him in the mornings and talk story with him.
Who planted all the sugarloaf pineapples? Lyman. Who planted all the lilikoi along the wooden fence on the Hilo side? Lyman. Who built the fence? Lyman — and me! When in doubt about who did something outside, the answer is invariably 'Lyman'.
His latest hat trick was the tiki hut he and Moku built.
Finally, I want to leave you with a Hawaiian Place Name and its translation. Today's place name is Mauna Loa. Mauna Loa literally translates to: Mountain Long — which also happens to be Lyman's middle name!
Aloha!
