Dragon Fruit
E Komo Mai! Welcome!
Behind the Waimea side house, we have a little keiki nursery with seedlings we are nurturing as well as some younger plants we acquire on island from nurseries or friends. One of these is the dragon fruit.
The dragon fruit has an extraordinary flower as you can see, and it grows on the Honolulu Queen cactus. The more formal name for dragon fruit is pitahaya and it's native to southern Mexico and Central America.
I took this picture two days ago and just couldn't believe my eyes. Lyman and I had started some upgrade projects a little after 6am when we saw this magnificent sight. I had to take a pic and blog it.
Later that day, we researched more on growing dragon fruit and got so excited, we committed to a new project -- to build the sturdy posts and trellises.
We should have those up within two weeks which will help the dragon fruits to grow even better.
If you can't wait for the ripened fruit blog I will undoubtedly write once it matures, research dragon fruit on the internet and I think you will be pleasantly intrigued by the photos.
A mature dragon fruit is nothing like any fruit you have ever seen. The shape and color are quite distinct.
We are not sure which of the three varieties this one is so even more intrigue! More good news is that we have five dragon fruit plants and each one will produce multiple fruits.
Who will be staying here when they ripen? Not sure! But if it's you, please research making dragon fruit smoothies and perhaps create and share a Koili Point Dragon Fruit smoothie recipe.
Finally, I want to leave you with a Hawaiian Place Name and its translation. Today's place name is ' Onomū'. Why did I choose Onomū? Because our friend who lives there gave us this dragon fruit plant. Onomū translates to 'Bay Silent' since "hono" means bay and mū means silent. So, Silent Bay. It's just a few miles up the road from Koili Point.
Aloha!
