Coconut Harvest
Aloha! One of the nice things I like about living on the East Side of Big Island (Hilo and Hamakua areas), is that people share when they have a bounty.
Recently, we trimmed 4 coconut trees and from each tree we harvested about 300 pounds of coconuts.
We loaded about 800 pounds of the 1200 pound total into our pickup truck. Then, shortly after, we drove the first load of donated fruits to Kokua Harvest — a non-profit group that helps folks who are having hard times feeding their families.
We regularly donate to Kokua Harvest as we get a lot of ripe fruits all at once and after offering them to friends and family, there is always a lot left over which we then donate to the community.
If anyone is a skilled coconut tree climber, please let me know. We have a lot of trees and we'll split the harvest with you!
With that, let me leave you with a Hawaiian word of the day: ' Niu ' -- which translates to ' coconut '.
